How to Film a Self-Tape in 2025 (With Just a Backdrop and a Light!)
If you’ve never filmed a self-tape before, don’t stress—you don’t need a fancy setup to create a high-quality audition. With Heathers: The Musical holding a virtual open call (due March 17, 2025!), now is the perfect time to learn how to film a professional self-tape with minimal equipment.
Here’s everything you need to nail your audition using just a plain backdrop, a lamp or ring light, and your phone!
My blue self tape backdrop I use for all of my auditions - get your own here!
1. Find a Plain Background
Casting directors don’t care about your bedroom décor—they want to see you. The best self-tapes use a clean, neutral backdrop so you’re the focus.
Best options:
A blank white, gray, or light blue wall
A solid-colored sheet or curtain hung smoothly
A collapsible backdrop (if you have one)
Avoid:
Busy backgrounds with posters or furniture
Bright colors that clash with your clothing or skin tone
Windows or mirrors reflecting light
2. Set Up Your Lighting
Good lighting makes a huge difference. You don’t need professional studio lights—a lamp or ring light will work.
Ring Light Option:
Position it in front of you, slightly above eye level
Adjust brightness to avoid washing out your face
Use a warm or neutral light setting
Lamp Option:
Place a soft white LED bulb in your lamp
Position it in front of you and slightly to the side
If shadows appear, use a second lamp on the opposite side
Avoid overhead lighting—it creates unflattering shadows…. trust me!
3. Camera Setup: Phone Works Perfectly
A high-quality self-tape doesn’t require a fancy camera—your smartphone is perfect.
Best phone settings:
1080p or 4K resolution
Horizontal (landscape) mode—not vertical
Use the back camera (higher quality than the front)
Make sure you’re centered in the frame, from chest up unless otherwise noted
If possible, use a tripod or stack books to keep your phone stable.
4. Get Clear, Crisp Audio
Audio is just as important as video. If you don’t have a mic, follow these tips:
For speaking/singing:
Stand close to your phone (but not too close)
Film in a quiet room to avoid background noise
Turn off fans, AC, and notifications
For singing tracks:
Play your accompaniment from another device at a moderate volume
Test levels so your voice isn’t drowned out
5. Frame Your Shot Like a Pro
Casting wants to see you, not a full-body dance routine (unless requested).
Acting Slate & Scenes:
Frame from chest up (medium close-up)
Keep your eyes near the top third of the screen
Don’t look directly at the camera—place your eyeline slightly off to the side
Singing Audition:
Use the same chest-up framing
Show expression, but don’t overdo it so it’s out of frame
Keep movements natural and motivated
6. Record, Review, and Submit
Before you submit:
Watch your tape for good lighting, sound, and framing
Keep multiple takes, but pick your best one
Follow submission instructions exactly

Final Thoughts: Keep It Simple & Confident
A great self-tape isn’t about expensive equipment—it’s about showcasing your talent and personality. With a plain background, good lighting, and a steady phone setup, you’ll be ready to rock your audition.
