How Often Should Actors Update Their Headshots?

Actors! Are you wondering if it’s officially time to get new headshots?

Not sure if its worth the money to hire a photographer again?

Don’t fret. Here are some tips to help you decide whether or not you need to update your headshot.

Headshot Photography Actor

1. You got a new haircut.

I’m all for the “big chop.” Ladies cutting their long locks into a “lob” (long bob) is the norm these days, and it looks amazing on everyone. However, if you’ve gotten a new haircut that drastically changed your look, it may be time for new headshots that reflect that.

2. You colored your hair.

For men and women, dyeing your hair a new color can make a massive difference in your appearance. I love brunettes who go blonde, blondes who go brunette, or adding pops of color to your hair, but any of those alterations warrant new headshots. Before you make any major decisions on your hair, know that you will most likely need new shots soon.

3. You’ve changed (or are trying to change) types.

Not going in for characters in their teens anymore? Use to be an Ariel, and now you’re vying for Ursula? Trying to change directions in regards to type? Good! Getting new headshots will do yourself a whole lot of justice.

4. It’s been 5+ years since your last headshot.

If you look the same as you did 5+ years ago, then I want the water you’re drinking. But, industry norms change over time. Expectations with headshots change over time. Look around to see if your headshot is becoming outdated.

5. You don’t look like your headshot.

Headshot photographers should be photographing you in your best light, enhancing your best features and make you feel fabulous. But if you simply don’t look like your headshot, something needs to change. Sometimes photographers shoot actors in a light that alters how they really look and feel in the real world. Whether its the makeup you had on in the shot, the lighting, or the photographer’s style, the headshot may not be doing your true self justice.

6. Ask a trusted industry professional.

Know someone in the biz that is surrounded by headshots daily? A casting director? Director? Producer? Choreographer? Have an agent or manager? Ask a trusted industry professional. They should be able to give you advice on whether or not it’s time to get new shots.
